Further discussions with Ukrainian President Zelensky and NATO leaders are also planned.
Former U.S. President
Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he is scheduled to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday morning regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine and related trade matters.
Trump shared this information via his social media platform, Truth Social, indicating that the call will address efforts to halt the conflict, which he described as causing significant casualties, with approximately 5,000 Ukrainian and Russian soldiers reportedly losing their lives weekly.
Following his conversation with Putin, Trump stated that he would subsequently communicate with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, as well as leaders from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
He expressed hopes that the discussions on Monday would be fruitful, aiming towards achieving a ceasefire agreement and ending the hostilities between Russia and Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Dmitry Peskov, the spokesperson for the Kremlin, confirmed that preparations are underway for the dialogue between Putin and Trump.
He commented to Russian news agencies that the call is being organized in response to Trump's announcement.
The Kremlin also indicated that a potential meeting between President Putin and President Zelensky would depend on whether the two countries reach certain agreements beforehand.
This statement came in light of the continued escalation of the conflict, which began with Russia's large-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, which the Russian government has characterized as a 'special military operation.'
