US Enhances Submarine Presence on Australian Coast as Part of AUKUS Agreement

The deployment of Virginia class submarines at HMAS Stirling signifies a strategic military partnership between the US and Australia.
In a significant development under the AUKUS partnership, the United States is set to expand its submarine presence at HMAS Stirling naval base in Western Australia, with plans to station four Virginia class submarines beginning in 2027. The Virginia class attack submarine USS Minnesota is currently engaged in training exercises off the Western Australian coast as part of this buildup.

The USS Minnesota, which moved its home port from Hawaii to Guam in November, is a prototype for the enhanced US naval presence.

Crew members operate advanced technology onboard, utilizing video game-like joysticks to manage sonar systems while navigating the submarine's missions, which can extend up to 100 days in stealth mode.

American naval personnel numbers at the base are expected to increase, with around 50 to 80 personnel anticipated to arrive by mid-2025, followed by a larger influx in the coming years.

An A$8 billion ($5 billion) modernization project is underway at HMAS Stirling to support the future operations of the "Submarine Rotational Force West."

The strategic positioning of HMAS Stirling closer to Asia and the Indian Ocean enhances its significance for US military operations, particularly concerning increased Chinese military activity in the region.

Analysts emphasize the defense of the Indian Ocean, especially against perceived challenges from rising Chinese capabilities, as a priority for US interests.

This strategic shift comes amid a broader redirection of US defense resources towards the Indo-Pacific region, away from previous focuses on the Middle East and Europe.

The Virginia class submarines are viewed as critical assets in ensuring a viable defense of Taiwan, underscoring their importance in the context of US commitments in the region.

The timing of the current expansion echoes heightened tensions, highlighted by a recent Chinese naval task group that conducted live-fire drills off the Australian east coast, which drew international attention.

As part of AUKUS, Australia plans to procure two used Virginia class submarines within the next decade and collaborate with the UK on developing a new class of nuclear-powered submarines to replace its existing diesel fleet.

Currently, there are 115 Australian personnel involved in nuclear navy training programs in the US, with an additional 130 Australians engaged in maintenance training at Pearl Harbor, reflecting the deepening military cooperation between Australia and the US.
