Iraq Exports 10 Million Barrels of Oil via Strait of Hormuz in April

Iraq's new oil minister, Basim Mohammed, announced that the country exported 10 million barrels of oil through the Strait of Hormuz in April.
Iraq exported 10 million barrels of oil via the Strait of Hormuz in April, down from about 93 million barrels monthly before the Iran war.

This decrease is attributed to the ongoing conflict and its impact on oil tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

The new oil minister, Basim Mohammed, shared these insights at a press conference, marking his first public address since taking office.

The current political climate has severely curtailed oil exports from countries such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, and Iraq.

This reduction in supply has led to a significant increase in global oil prices due to heightened demand and limited availability.

The Strait of Hormuz serves as a critical chokepoint for global oil trade, with its closure exacerbating these market fluctuations.

In response to these challenges, Iraq is focusing on boosting production and export capacity.

As of now, the country produces 1.4 million barrels per day.

Additionally, Iraq has resumed crude exports through the Kirkuk–Ceyhan oil pipeline following an agreement between Baghdad and the Kurdistan Regional Government.

Currently, the country exports approximately 200,000 barrels via the Ceyhan port, with plans to increase this number to 500,000 barrels.

To further enhance its export capabilities, Iraq is in discussions with Turkey regarding a new cooperation agreement covering upstream and downstream oil projects.

This initiative aims to expand on previous deals that primarily focused on crude exports.

Moreover, Iraq is engaging in negotiations with several US companies, including Chevron, ExxonMobil, and Halliburton, for the development of oil and gas projects.

The minister emphasized the importance of finalizing these contracts promptly to secure substantial financial revenues for Iraq.

Iraq also plans to engage with OPEC (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) to increase its production capacity and export capabilities.

This move is part of a broader strategy to reach a production capacity of 5 million barrels per day through dialogue and cooperation within the organization.

Despite global fluctuations in oil prices, Iraq remains committed to OPEC and supports a strong, stable organization that ensures acceptable and sustainable oil pricing.

This stance was echoed by two Iraqi oil officials who spoke to Reuters in April, following the United Arab Emirates' decision to leave the group.
