Syria Sees Increase in Overflight Traffic Following Regional Conflict

Syria Sees Increase in Overflight Traffic Following Regional Conflict

After a sharp decline in March due to the US-Israeli conflict with Iran, Syrian authorities reported an increase in overflight traffic in April.
Syrian authorities have observed an upturn in overflight traffic following a significant downturn in March, attributed largely to the tensions surrounding the US-Israeli conflict with Iran.

According to official reports from the General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport, 2,523 transit flights were recorded in April, marking a notable increase from just 32 flights in March when Syria had effectively closed its airspace due to regional hostilities.

The numbers, although lower than the pre-March peaks that saw 4,267 flights in February and 5,244 in January, suggest a gradual reengagement of international aviation with Syrian airspace.

This trend is seen as an indication of the country's strategic importance for transit flights, given its geographical location.

Omar Hosari, head of the aviation authority, noted that this resurgence represents a return to normalcy and highlights the significance of Syria's airspace in the regional aviation landscape.

The reopening of Syrian airspace in early April, following the implementation of a US-Iran ceasefire agreement, is seen as a pivotal factor contributing to this revival.

Prior to 2024, Syria remained largely isolated due to security concerns stemming from the Bashar Assad regime, leading to a significant number of airlines cancelling flights to Damascus.

However, since the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024, there has been a steady recovery in aviation activity within the country.

Recent developments have seen international routes resume operations, including connections from Doha, Qatar, and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to Damascus International Airport, signaling further normalization and reintegration into global air travel networks.
