Security forces arrest 71 individuals and seize explosives and weapons in pre-emptive operations.
DAMASCUS: Syria has initiated nationwide pre-emptive military operations against Daesh (ISIS) cells, according to a spokesperson for the Interior Ministry.
The operations involved 61 raids, resulting in the arrest of 71 individuals and the seizure of explosives and weapons, as reported by state-run Al Ekhbariya TV.
These security measures are taking place prior to Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa's upcoming visit to Washington, where he is scheduled to meet with U.S. President
Donald Trump.
The meetings are expected to bolster international cooperation in the fight against Daesh, particularly within the framework of the U.S.-led coalition combating the terrorist organization.
The U.S. State Department and Pentagon have not yet responded to requests for comment regarding these developments.
Additionally, there is ongoing speculation about a potential U.S. military presence at an air base in Damascus aimed at facilitating a security agreement between Syria and Israel, according to six sources familiar with the matter who spoke to Reuters.
Furthermore, a U.S. administration official has indicated that Washington continually assesses its strategic posture in Syria to effectively counteract Daesh activities.
