Turkiye Mediates Talks for Hamas Fighters in Gaza

Turkiye is working with the United States and Arab mediators to secure safe passage for Hamas fighters trapped in Israeli-controlled areas of Gaza.
Turkiye has taken a role in mediating discussions aimed at securing safe passage for Hamas fighters who are currently situated within tunnels in the Israel-controlled region of Gaza.

According to sources, including a Palestinian source close to the mediation efforts and Turkish officials, Turkiye is collaborating with Egypt, Qatar, and the United States in this endeavor.

The fate of approximately 200 Hamas fighters has posed a significant challenge to ongoing ceasefire talks between Israel and the Palestinian militant group.

These discussions have been geared towards moving beyond the current state of ceasefire and establishing a more permanent resolution to the conflict that has lasted for two years.

Two Turkish officials, including the spokesperson for President Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling AK Party, have confirmed Turkiye's involvement in mediating negotiations regarding the 200 Palestinian fighters.

Details of these discussions remain undisclosed.

US envoy Steve Witkoff recently noted that resolving this standoff would serve as a significant test for future steps within the broader ceasefire plan.

He suggested that providing safe passage to Hamas-controlled areas of Gaza could be a viable solution for this issue.

A Hamas official, who chose to remain anonymous, confirmed Turkiye's role as a mediator but provided no further details on the negotiations.

These discussions pertain to sensitive security matters.

The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office has not issued any comment regarding Turkiye's involvement in these talks.

In recent weeks, sources have indicated that Hamas fighters trapped in the Israeli-held Rafah area of Gaza are prepared to relinquish their arms in exchange for passage to other regions within Gaza.

However, Hamas has not officially confirmed the number of trapped fighters and has previously insisted on the right to allow them safe passage to areas under the group's control.

Israel has thus far resisted this demand.

Turkiye holds a significant stance as a critic of Israel’s military actions in Gaza and maintains close ties with the Palestinian groups, serving as one of the signatories to the US-backed ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas.
