Lebanese President Emphasizes Army's Disarmament Mission Amid Israeli Attacks

President Aoun calls for decisive action from the Lebanese army as Israel continues its military operations within Lebanon.
BEIRUT: Speaking from Sofia, Bulgaria, on Monday, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun described the Lebanese army’s disarmament mission as ‘decisive’ amid ongoing Israeli attacks.

Aoun stressed that this mission should proceed alongside a negotiation process which he considers essential for achieving national objectives and Lebanon's higher interests. The Lebanese president referenced previous negotiations between Lebanon and Israel regarding maritime border demarcation, emphasizing the need to extend state authority across its territory and borders to halt Israeli incursions.

He recalled over 10 negotiation rounds with political unity among factions in Lebanon. On Monday, Israel targeted a civilian vehicle near Al-Baisariyah on the coastal road north of the Litani River, killing driver Samir Fakih, an official with the Servants of Imam Hussain Association affiliated with Hezbollah.

Later that day, Israeli drones carried out airstrikes in areas within the Tyre governorate and other regions.Hezbollah MP Ali Fayyad accused Israel and the US of escalating operations to pressure Lebanon into submission.

He stated that Resolution 1701, which established a ceasefire between the countries, would not be accepted as a political or security track by Lebanon.According to Reuters, Israeli officials have called for the Lebanese army to search homes in southern Lebanon for weapons, a request Lebanese military leadership has rejected fearing it may spark civil unrest and derail disarmament efforts.

Prime Minister Nawaf Salam confirmed his government’s commitment to reforming state institutions and consolidating full sovereignty over Lebanese territory.

The discussions also focused on deploying the Lebanese army in southern regions for stability and enhanced control over seaports and airports.US officials claimed that Hezbollah has received around $1 billion from Iran since the end of Israel's last war on Lebanon, asserting their aim to cut off Iranian funding to Hezbollah and encourage disarmament.
