High Casualties in Gaza as Humanitarian Aid Struggles to Enter
Israeli airstrikes continue amid international pressure, with humanitarian efforts faltering in a crisis-stricken Gaza Strip.
DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza: Israeli airstrikes have intensified in the Gaza Strip, resulting in at least 82 casualties, including women and a week-old infant, according to reports from the Gaza Health Ministry and local hospitals.
This escalation in airstrikes comes amidst growing international condemnation of Israel's military actions.
On Tuesday, Israel permitted dozens of humanitarian trucks to enter Gaza, but these supplies have yet to reach civilians facing severe shortages of food, water, and medical assistance.
Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the UN's humanitarian agency, confirmed that no trucks had been dispatched from the Gaza side of the Kerem Shalom crossing.
Furthermore, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric stated that while aid entered Gaza, humanitarian workers were unable to deliver it to distribution points due to complications caused by the Israeli military.
Workers reportedly had to reload supplies onto different trucks, running out of time to make meaningful distribution.
The Israeli defense body overseeing humanitarian aid claimed that trucks were entering Gaza on Wednesday morning, although it remains uncertain if further distribution efforts would proceed.
The UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, noted that its personnel had waited at the border for several hours to gather aid but were unable to proceed on Tuesday.
Simultaneously, tensions within Israel escalated as demonstrators opposed the government’s decision to allow aid into Gaza while Hamas continues to hold Israeli hostages.
Some activists attempted to obstruct trucks carrying humanitarian supplies but were restrained by police forces.
In a separate incident, a group of diplomats experienced gunfire while visiting Jenin in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.
The diplomats were assessing the humanitarian situation in Jenin at the time.
According to sources, shots were heard as they were receiving briefings from the Palestinian Authority, although no injuries were reported.
The city of Jenin has been a focal point of recent Israeli military operations, aimed at targeting militants, resulting in widespread displacement of Palestinian residents.
The tensions followed a ceasefire deal with Hamas, which has markedly deteriorated amid ongoing conflict that began with Hamas's attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, leading to numerous casualties on both sides.
Internationally, pressure has mounted on Israel regarding its military campaigns.
On Tuesday, the United Kingdom suspended free trade discussions with Israel in light of the ongoing violence.
This announcement came shortly after commitments from the UK, Canada, and France to push for Israel to cease hostilities.
Additionally, European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas indicated that the EU is reevaluating existing trade agreements with Israel based on its military actions in Gaza.
Israeli officials maintain that military operations will continue until all hostages captured by Hamas are returned and the militant group is either incapacitated or expelled.
Conversely, Hamas has stated it is willing to release hostages in exchange for an end to military operations and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the region.
Negotiations aimed at establishing a ceasefire have encountered delays, with Israel recalling its senior negotiating team from talks in Doha on Tuesday.
Reports indicate a significant impasse between the two parties on key issues.
As Israeli strikes persist, the situation in Gaza remains dire, with particular emphasis on Khan Younis, where recent bombings have killed 24 individuals, notably 14 from a single family.
The Israeli military has not commented on the specific strikes but continues to assert its targets are solely Hamas infrastructure, which it alleges is protected by civilian locations.
In a related statement, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas urged global leaders to take decisive steps to lift the siege on Gaza, calling for the delivery of humanitarian aid and demanding an end to hostilities.
He emphasized the desperate need for international intervention to protect the Palestinian population amid escalating violence that has reportedly caused significant loss of life and destruction in Gaza.
