Israel Cuts Power to Gaza's Desalination Plant Amid Ongoing Humanitarian Crisis

Amnesty International criticizes Israel's actions as a violation of international humanitarian law following the cessation of electricity to vital water services in Gaza.
Amnesty International has condemned Israel's decision to cut electricity to a key desalination plant in Gaza, labelling the action as 'harsh and unlawful' and describing it as a form of 'warfare'.

This decision followed a week during which Israel had barred the entry of essential humanitarian aid into the region.

The cessation of electricity to the facility, which is critical for the provision of drinking water in the Gaza Strip, is viewed by the organization as a violation of international humanitarian law.

Amnesty International further asserted that such actions are indicative of a broader campaign of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

The organization emphasized that these 'inhumane and illegal practices' reflect Israel's ongoing strategy to impose conditions of living that are tantamount to physical destruction, a prohibited act under the Genocide Convention.

It highlighted that such measures underscore Israel's status as an occupying power, allowing it to control essential services at will.

Amnesty International's statement called for the prevention of Israel using water as a weapon of war and emphasized that fuel, food, shelter, and other essential supplies necessary for the survival of civilians are matters of life and death, not leverage for negotiation.

Gaza is experiencing a catastrophic situation regarding water and sanitation due to extensive damage to its infrastructure caused by ongoing military operations and an enduring, unlawful blockade.

The complete ban on fuel supplies threatens the operation of other water facilities, including wells.

As the occupying power, Israel is mandated by international humanitarian law to ensure the provision of food, medicine, and other essential supplies necessary for the survival of civilians in the Gaza Strip.

In related news, the humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate as airstrikes reportedly resulted in ten fatalities over a 24-hour period, coinciding with ongoing protests in Israel regarding prisoner exchanges.

Furthermore, in the West Bank, Israeli military operations resulted in multiple casualties and numerous arrests, contributing to rising tensions and widespread unrest.

Israeli military actions in Jenin led to the deaths of four Palestinians and multiple injuries, as military incursions triggered widespread violence throughout various parts of the West Bank.

Reports indicate that forces have resorted to aggressive tactics, including physical violence against individuals during detentions, which adds to the already strained humanitarian conditions in the region.

Additionally, developments indicate that negotiations between Israel and Hezbollah are underway, with the recent release of five Lebanese detainees by Israel viewed as a gesture of goodwill amid ongoing talks facilitated by the United States aimed at resolving border disputes between the two countries.

This development is part of a broader strategy to stabilize the region and address long-standing territorial disagreements, with multiple working groups anticipated to be created to address the issues collaboratively with international oversight.
