Macron Condemns Violence During PSG Celebrations Following Champions League Victory
Two fatalities and numerous arrests mark a troubled celebration of football triumph in France.
PARIS: French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the violence that erupted during celebrations following Paris Saint-Germain's (PSG) decisive 5-0 victory over Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League final held in Munich.
Speaking at the Elysee Palace, where he welcomed the victorious team, Macron described the violent clashes that accompanied the celebrations as 'unacceptable.' He stated, 'Nothing can justify what has happened in the last few hours; the violent clashes are unacceptable.'
In the aftermath of the celebrations, which turned chaotic, two individuals lost their lives, and law enforcement made nearly 600 arrests across France as fans marked PSG's triumph.
Macron noted the serious ramifications of the disturbances, highlighting that around 30 police officers and multiple firefighters sustained injuries.
He specifically addressed a police officer from Coutances who remains in a coma due to the unrest.
During the reception at the Elysee, Macron congratulated PSG’s Coach Luis Enrique and the players for their achievement, acknowledging their prompt denunciation of the violence that marred the celebrations.
The club has emphasized that the disturbances were the actions of a minority and do not reflect the values of PSG or the behavior of the majority of their supporters.
'These isolated acts are contrary to the club’s values and in no way represent the vast majority of our supporters, whose exemplary behavior throughout the season deserves to be commended,' the club stated on Sunday.
