Scholz Criticizes Discussion on Sending European Peacekeeping Force to Ukraine

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expresses discomfort over premature discussions regarding peacekeeping missions amidst ongoing conflict.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reiterated his strong objections to the ongoing discussions about deploying a European peacekeeping force to Ukraine, characterizing the discourse as "completely premature." This statement follows a special summit focused on Ukraine held in Paris on Monday evening, where Scholz expressed that such discussions are not reflective of the current realities in the conflict.

In his remarks, Scholz conveyed a sense of unease regarding the conversation, stating, "I want to be clear that I am even somewhat disturbed by these discussions," adding that considerations for potential peace talks that have yet to occur are being discussed without taking Ukrainian perspectives into account.

He emphasized the inappropriateness of deliberating over peace arrangements at a time when Ukraine remains engaged in a fierce war with Russia, which he described as continuing aggressions lacking regard for peace.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, speaking ahead of an emergency meeting of European supporters for Ukraine, indicated his willingness to send peacekeeping forces to Ukraine if necessary.

In an opinion piece published in The Telegraph, Starmer suggested that the UK could take a "leading role" in securing guarantees for Ukraine’s safety.

French President Emmanuel Macron has been advocating for the establishment of a European peacekeeping force for some time.

Prior to the summit, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian noted that there are "very concrete discussions" taking place on several levels regarding this proposal.

Scholz also underscored his opposition to deploying a peacekeeping force in the absence of U.S. involvement, asserting, "There should not be a division of security and responsibility between Europe and the United States." He highlighted that NATO is founded on the principle of joint action and shared risks, stating that this fundamental tenet should not be called into question.
