Syria Enhances Security for 14th Anniversary of Revolution Amid Anticipated Protests

The Syrian government increases security measures in preparation for the anniversary of the uprising that began in 2011, as public demonstrations are expected.
In anticipation of public events marking the 14th anniversary of the Syrian Revolution, the government has bolstered security measures in Damascus, particularly around Umayyad Square.

This year's commemorations coincide with the notable political changes following the ousting of former President Bashar al-Assad on December 8, 2024.

Protests are expected in various locations, with dozens of demonstrators gathering at Sabaa Bahrat Square in Idlib.

Protesters displayed the revolutionary Syrian flag, a symbol of resistance throughout the conflict, while voicing demands for accountability from former regime officials and advocating for transitional justice.

A Syrian security source reported an incident involving an attack on a security checkpoint in Banias, where the General Security Directorate apprehended a former regime soldier in the rural area of Tartous.

It is noted that remnants of the Assad government targeted a cultural center checkpoint in Banias, launching an assault involving two hand grenades from a motorbike.

Fortunately, no injuries to security personnel were reported as a result of this attack.

The Syrian Revolution, which commenced in 2011 as part of a broader uprising across the region, called for freedom, dignity, and an end to corruption.

Initially characterized by peaceful demonstrations, the movement faced a violent crackdown by the Assad regime, leading to significant displacement of populations both within Syria and beyond its borders.

The conflict has resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths and has transformed Syria into a focal point of ongoing global humanitarian and geopolitical crises.
