The arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu ignites political upheaval in Turkey.

The arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu ignites political upheaval in Turkey.

The opposition leader has been detained on allegations of corruption and terrorism, sparking nationwide protests as worries about democratic procedures rise.
On March 19, 2025, authorities in Turkey apprehended Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, a leading member of the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) and viewed as a significant contender against President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

İmamoğlu is charged with crimes including corruption, aiding a terrorist organization, and leading a criminal group.

More than 100 others, comprising aides, district mayors, journalists, and business leaders, were also captured alongside him.

The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office claims that İmamoğlu was involved in activities such as extortion, bribery, and money laundering concerning municipal contracts.

He is additionally accused of supporting the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), recognized as a terrorist organization by Turkey and its Western allies, by establishing an electoral partnership with the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party during the 2024 municipal elections.

İmamoğlu and his supporters have dismissed these allegations, asserting that they are politically driven.

Before his arrest, on March 18, 2025, Istanbul University revoked İmamoğlu's academic degree due to irregularities.

This revocation could challenge his eligibility to participate in the 2028 presidential election.

The decision was made just prior to the opposition's plans to nominate him as their candidate for president.

In reaction to these detentions, the CHP labeled the acts as a 'civilian coup' and called for nationwide protests.

Thousands gathered in Istanbul and other cities, despite a four-day prohibition on public demonstrations enforced by the Istanbul governor's office.

Authorities also imposed restrictions on social media access, affecting platforms like Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram.

İmamoğlu's arrest has attracted global attention.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz voiced concerns regarding its ramifications for EU-Turkey relations.

Human rights organizations have condemned the detentions, interpreting them as a heightened assault on opposition and dissenting voices in Turkey.

Economically, these developments have generated instability.

The Turkish lira has plummeted to an all-time low, and the Istanbul Stock Exchange has seen substantial declines.

Investors are worried about the potential effects on Turkey's political and economic environments.

İmamoğlu's political path echoes that of President Erdoğan, with both having served as mayors of Istanbul and encountered legal issues.

His electoral victories, especially in 2019 and 2024, have established him as a formidable challenger.

His arrest raises concerns about the future of Turkey's democratic practices and the distribution of political power within the nation.
