19 Australian Women and Children Linked to Daesh Set to Return from Syria

19 Australian Women and Children Linked to Daesh Set to Return from Syria

A group of 19 Australian women and children associated with the Daesh group are scheduled to return from Syria, with some potentially facing charges.
MELBOURNE, Australia: A total of 19 Australian women and children who have ties to the Daesh group have arranged flights to return from Syria.

Some among them could be charged with crimes upon their arrival.

This announcement came from Australia's government on Tuesday regarding the expected arrivals in Sydney and Melbourne, which are set to take place on the same day.

The government emphasized that individuals who have committed offenses should anticipate facing legal consequences.

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke stated that no assistance would be provided to this group.

He highlighted that these individuals made the choice to join a dangerous terrorist organization and placed their children in an 'unspeakable situation.' Australian law enforcement and intelligence agencies have been preparing for their return since 2014, with established plans to manage and monitor them.

The government's primary concern remains the safety of the Australian community.

Following this departure, at least two Australians will remain in Roj camp, located near the Iraq border in northeast Syria, where individuals linked to Daesh have been held since its defeat in the Middle East in 2019.

A mother who was initially prevented from returning due to a temporary exclusion order did not travel with this group.

The government has previously revealed that one of the women at Roj is subject to an exclusion order, which can prevent high-risk citizens from returning for up to two years.

These exclusion orders were introduced through laws enacted in 2019 to prevent Daesh fighters who have been defeated from returning to Australia.

The last cohort of Australians returned from Syria on May 7th without any government assistance.

Some notable individuals among those returning include Kawsar Ahmed, also known as Kawsar Abbas, and her daughter Zeinab Ahmed, both arrested upon arrival in Melbourne for allegedly purchasing a Yazidi slave.

Janai Safar, 32, was also arrested at Sydney Airport on charges of being part of a terrorist organization and entering a region controlled by such an organization.

The Australian government has previously repatriated women and children from Syrian detention camps twice.

Other Australians have returned privately without any government assistance.
