Israeli Forces Open Fire on Gaza Aid Flotilla, No Live Ammunition Used: Israel

Israel claims no live ammunition was used and there were no casualties as it intercepted the aid flotilla sailing towards Gaza.
May 19, 2026 -- Israeli forces reportedly opened fire on at least two vessels in an aid flotilla sailing toward Gaza on Tuesday.

According to video footage and flotilla organizers, the incident occurred, but Israel stated that no live ammunition was used and there were no casualties.Video from the flotilla's livestream captured soldiers firing shots at two of the boats, with the type of ammunition used remaining unclear.

The Israeli foreign ministry issued a statement claiming, "At no point was live ammunition fired," emphasizing that multiple warnings were given to the vessels and non-lethal means were employed as a warning.

They specified that this action targeted only one vessel. The Global Sumud Flotilla stated on its website that 48 vessels had been intercepted, leading to the detention of approximately 400 individuals.

Two boats continued sailing in the eastern Mediterranean.Israel's foreign ministry previously declared on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday that it would not allow any breach of the lawful naval blockade of Gaza.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan condemned Israel's intervention against what he called the "voyagers of hope" and urged the international community to take action against these actions.

Ships from the Global Sumud Flotilla set sail for a third time on Thursday, departing from southern Turkey after previous attempts to deliver aid to Gaza were intercepted by Israel in international waters. The group had previously reported that there were 426 individuals participating in the flotilla from 39 countries.

The United States Treasury subsequently imposed sanctions against four people associated with what it described as the "pro-Hamas" flotilla, citing their alleged association with Hamas extremists.

Pro-Palestinian activists argue that Israel and the US incorrectly equate advocacy for Palestinian rights with support for Hamas.Despite a ceasefire agreed upon in October that included assurances of increased aid, Palestinians and international aid organizations maintain that supplies reaching Gaza remain insufficient.

The situation is dire in Gaza, where over 2 million people have been displaced, living in damaged homes or makeshift tents on open ground.
