Former Israeli PM Ehud Olmert: US-Iran Nuclear Agreement Best Way to Defuse Tensions

Olmert says diplomatic efforts offer best chance of curbing Iran's nuclear ambitions.
Ehud Olmert, the former Israeli prime minister, sees a renewed nuclear agreement between the US and Iran as the only realistic way to defuse one of the Middle East’s most dangerous flashpoints.

In an appearance on the Arab News current affairs program “Frankly Speaking,” Olmert made the case for diplomacy over military force in curbing Tehran's nuclear ambitions.

Olmert stated that a deal limiting uranium enrichment, barring any military dimension to Iran’s nuclear program, and restoring strict international inspections would amount to a strategic win for Israel.

He emphasized that such an agreement would be necessary whether Israel's current government supports it or not.

Olmert pointed out that the 2015 nuclear agreement reached under former US President Barack Obama effectively capped Iran’s enrichment at levels below what was needed to create a bomb.

The central question, according to Olmert, is how to move forward with this diplomatic approach given the current political climate in both Israel and the United States.

He expressed hope that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's bloc would be voted out in upcoming elections, stating that it represents a 'bad government' for Israel.

Olmert also addressed regional tensions involving Lebanon and Hamas, placing part of the responsibility on these groups but criticizing Israel’s leadership for not being innovative or creative enough in offering political solutions rather than relying on military actions.

He called for political plans alongside military pressure to address these issues effectively.

In his discussion of Lebanon, Olmert suggested that a political agreement between Israel and Lebanon could disarm Hezbollah while ensuring security for both nations.

Additionally, he criticized the Israeli government for not adequately addressing settler violence in the Palestinian territories or preventing what he described as 'attempts at ethnic cleansing'.
