Civilians Targeted Amid Surge of Violence in North-West Syria

Escalating sectarian violence has left over 1,000 dead, highlighting fragility in the region following the downfall of the Assad regime.
In north-west Syria, a wave of violence has erupted in the aftermath of the ousting of President Bashar al-Assad, leading to the deaths of over 1,000 individuals, including at least 745 civilians.

This surge in violence began shortly after the regime's collapse on December 8, when a rebel coalition, primarily led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), seized control of the region.

The violence peaked with a brutal episode in the Alawite village of Arza, where 24 civilians were killed by Sunni protesters in a publicized act of revenge.

Reports indicate that the violence is largely fueled by the complex sectarian divisions deeply embedded in Syrian society, targeting Alawites—a minority group associated with the former regime.

The initial attacks were reportedly triggered when about 4,000 militants loyal to the Assad regime assaulted numerous Syrian security checkpoints along the coast, prompting an emergency mobilization of government forces.

This mobilization saw a rush of armed civilians and militia members into the area, leading to widespread reprisals against Alawite civilians and the looting of properties.

Accounts from survivors in Arza describe crowds rounding up local men and executing them amidst chants of anti-Alawite slogans.

The killings are characterized by survivors as a retaliation for past grievances associated with the Assad regime’s actions during the civil war.

Witness testimonies detail scenes of violence, looting, and a complete breakdown of law and order.

According to the Syrian Network for Human Rights, the violence across the region was not limited to Arza, with 529 civilians killed by armed groups and government forces.

Additionally, reports indicate that 225 civilians and 207 members of the government’s security apparatus were also among the casualties.

The initial response from government officials dismissed the claims of widespread violence, but as the scale of the tragedy emerged, promises of accountability were made.

Ahmed al-Sharaa, the interim president, established a committee to investigate the coast's turmoil, asserting that no individual would be above the law in the government's pursuit of justice.

Many residents of Arza expressed a profound sense of insecurity following the attacks, leading to an uptick in displacement as families fled towards Lebanon.

Reports indicate that at least 6,000 Alawites sought refuge in Lebanon following the escalations.

As the violence continues, humanitarian experts underscore the urgent need for a reconciliation process and mechanisms for transitional justice to address the historical grievances that have exacerbated the current cycle of revenge and violence.

Observers suggest a comprehensive approach addressing both victims and perpetrators is crucial for sustainable peace in the region.
