U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff announces planned talks with Ukrainian officials as diplomatic efforts intensify.
Steve Witkoff, the U.S. special envoy, announced on Thursday that he is facilitating discussions with Ukraine for a potential peace agreement framework aimed at ending hostilities with Russia.
A meeting is scheduled for next week in Saudi Arabia, likely in Riyadh or Jeddah, to further these negotiations.
Witkoff confirmed to reporters at the White House that arrangements are being made to coordinate with Ukrainian officials for this pivotal dialogue.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that he will arrive in Saudi Arabia on Monday, the day prior to the planned discussions between high-level officials from Ukraine and the United States.
In a post on social media platform X, Zelensky expressed Ukraine's strong interest in achieving peace and indicated that his team would remain in Saudi Arabia to collaborate with U.S. partners following his arrival.
Former President
Donald Trump has also announced his intention to visit Saudi Arabia, suggesting that the trip could occur within the next six weeks.
This announcement follows a series of high-profile discussions between Trump and Zelensky, which had previously been marked by tension during their meeting at the White House on February 28. However, both parties have since continued negotiations regarding a revenue-sharing minerals deal.
In a recent address to a joint session of Congress, Trump revealed that he had received correspondence from Zelensky, in which the Ukrainian leader expressed his readiness to engage in negotiations promptly.
Witkoff highlighted that the upcoming meeting in Saudi Arabia aims to lay down a framework for a peace agreement and an initial ceasefire, marking a significant step in ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
