Fatal Shooting of Pregnant Palestinian Woman Raises Concerns Amid Escalating Violence in West Bank
The incident highlights ongoing tensions as Israeli military operations intensify in response to security threats.
KAFR AL-LABAD, West Bank: In the early hours of Sunday, Sondos Shalabi, who was eight months pregnant, was shot and killed by Israeli security forces in the vicinity of the Nur Shams refugee camp, located in the northern West Bank city of Tulkarem.
The incident unfolds against the backdrop of increased Israeli military operations aimed at suppressing Palestinian militant activities following the cessation of hostilities between Israel and Hamas last month.
According to Mohammed Shula, Shalabi’s father-in-law, she called him in distress, asking for help just before the shooting occurred while she and her husband, Yazan Shula, attempted to flee their home due to the presence of Israeli forces.
The military had established a significant presence around the camp days prior to the incident as part of a broader crackdown on Palestinian militants in the region.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz indicated that these operations were intended to prevent interference from Iran, allied with Hamas.
The Israeli army reported that it has referred the circumstances surrounding Shalabi's death to its military police for investigation.
Alongside this tragedy, another Palestinian woman, aged 21, was killed nearby when an explosive device, reportedly placed by Israeli forces, detonated as she approached her home.
The military stated that it targeted a wanted militant in that location and expressed regret for harm caused to uninvolved civilians.
Since the escalation of conflict following Hamas's attacks on October 7, 2023, the Palestinian Health Ministry has reported at least 905 Palestinian fatalities attributed to Israeli military actions in the West Bank, with casualties including both militants and civilians.
The situation has raised alarm among Palestinian residents, with various reports indicating a shift towards more aggressive military tactics within the occupied territories.
Maher Kanan, affiliated with an emergency response team, expressed concerns about the escalating civilian toll, likening the ongoing military operations to those conducted in Gaza.
Mohammed Shula recounted that his son and daughter-in-law were planning to leave Nur Shams due to escalating military presence and fears for Shalabi's impending delivery.
They aimed to reach Shalabi's family home for safety and proximity to medical facilities.
Shortly after departing, gunfire erupted, leading to Yazan Shula being shot and Shalabi subsequently losing her life.
Her unborn child also did not survive the incident.
As rescue attempts were hindered by military restrictions, the Palestinian Red Crescent confirmed that medics faced repeated detainment while trying to reach the couple.
Eventually, after significant delays, they were able to transport Yazan Shula, who remains in critical condition, to a hospital.
Following the incident, the Israeli military conducted further operations in the refugee camp, resulting in widespread destruction and disruptions to local utilities.
As tensions escalate, Israeli authorities maintain that their military actions are focused on security measures against recognized threats, while many Palestinian civilians report feeling targeted and victimized amidst the conflict.
The Israeli military has not provided comment regarding individual testimonies from residents claiming forced evacuations.
The circumstances surrounding the deaths of Shalabi and her unborn child reflect a deepening crisis in the West Bank, marked by increasing violence and profound suffering among the civilian population.
