Global Divides: UAE Supports UN's 'Pact for the Future' Amid Conflicts and Calls for Reform
UAE supports UN's "Pact for the Future" amid regional tensions; calls for increased cooperation and sustainable development funding.
The UAE has welcomed the UN's adoption of the "Pact for the Future," emphasizing rebuilding trust and supporting Sustainable Development Goals. Notably, Emirati Development Minister Ohoud Al-Roumi highlighted international cooperation, youth, women’s empowerment, sustainable digital economies, and modern technology. This comes amid opposition from Russia, Iran, Sudan, and Syria, and abstentions from countries like Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Oman.
Following this, Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf, at the same Summit, called for UN reforms to tackle global challenges more effectively. He stressed the need to address imbalances among member states and highlighted the marginalization of African states in international institutions while praising the UN Secretary-General for his reform initiatives.
In related efforts towards sustainable development, Carla Haddad Mardini from UNICEF has urged the private sector to significantly boost funding for the UN's 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. She pointed out the severe challenges faced by children, especially in the Middle East and North Africa, and called for comprehensive public and private sector support due to tightening government aid budgets.
Meanwhile, Syria has voiced strong opposition to the "Pact for the Future," with UN representative Qusay Al-Dahhak condemning it for lacking comprehensive organizational reforms and primarily serving Western interests. He also criticized Western sanctions on Syria and called for genuine multilateral action in UN mechanisms.
Shifting to the escalating conflict, Israel has intensified its campaign against Hezbollah in Lebanon, resulting in over 490 deaths and mass evacuations. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu clarified that the strikes targeted Hezbollah, not Lebanese civilians, who were urged to evacuate areas with Hezbollah weaponry, while Hezbollah responded with rocket attacks, escalating the situation further.
