Global Leaders Condemn Israel's Resumption of Airstrikes in Gaza

Global Leaders Condemn Israel's Resumption of Airstrikes in Gaza

International reactions escalate as humanitarian concerns rise amidst renewed conflict.
On March 19, 2025, global leaders reacted strongly to Israel's renewed military operations in Gaza, resulting in significant casualties among the Palestinian population.

Reports indicate that numerous airstrikes have led to hundreds of deaths and injuries in the region within a short timeframe.

French President Emmanuel Macron characterized the escalation in airstrikes as a "serious setback," asserting that there will be no military solution to the crisis in Gaza.

In a joint press conference with Jordan's King Abdullah II in Paris, Macron emphasized the need to prevent forced displacement and called for an immediate cessation of hostilities.

King Abdullah II stated that Israel's actions represent a severe risk, highlighting ongoing attacks as violations of international law that undermine peace efforts.

He reiterated the necessity of a political resolution based on a two-state solution to ensure safety for both Palestinians and Israelis.

The Arab League convened an emergency meeting in Cairo, urging the United States to pressure Israel into respecting ceasefire agreements, which have been violated during the latest hostilities.

The United Nations Secretary-General echoed these sentiments, underscoring the urgent need to observe the ceasefire to alleviate humanitarian suffering in Gaza.

A spokesperson condemned attacks on UN personnel in the region, calling for thorough investigations and accountability.

This incident marks a troubling escalation, with 280 UN staff reportedly killed in Gaza since October 7, 2023. Additionally, the UN has called for unrestricted humanitarian access to Gaza, warning that delayed aid could lead to increased famine and distress.

China's permanent representative to the UN, Fu Tsong, condemned the Israeli airstrikes, advocating for a continued commitment to the ceasefire and opposing the politicization of humanitarian aid.

He called on Israel to fully restore humanitarian supplies to Gaza without delay.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed deep concern over civilian casualties resulting from the resumed conflict and noted the plight of dual German-Israeli detainees held by Hamas.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock voiced that the renewed violence jeopardizes peace efforts endorsed by Arab nations.

The European Union issued a statement expressing sorrow over the collapse of the ceasefire and the resulting loss of civilian lives, including children.

The EU called for an end to military operations in Gaza and sought the resumption of humanitarian aid and electricity access without impediments.

EU Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell was briefed on the unacceptable situation in Gaza, and plans for diplomatic discussions with Egypt were announced.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer conveyed grave concern regarding the recent Israeli operations that have resulted in widespread casualties.

He described the scenes of injured Palestinians being rushed to hospitals as shocking, as he addressed Parliament.

India also articulated its worries regarding the situation in Gaza following the resumption of airstrikes and urged for humanitarian assistance for those affected.

The Indian government called for the release of individuals held captive by Hamas.

In the United States, the State Department acknowledged the existence of a temporary proposal to extend the ceasefire, though officials admitted that opportunities for this plan are diminishing quickly.

The proposal reportedly includes the release of hostages held by Hamas and the release of a significant number of Palestinians detained in Israeli prisons.

A U.S. envoy recently proposed extending the ceasefire until April 20, contingent upon these terms while organizing the facilitation of humanitarian aid and a consideration of a longer-term ceasefire arrangement.
