Israel Expands Security Annexation in Gaza Amid Escalating Military Operations
Israeli Defense Minister Plans to Control Extensive Areas in Gaza and West Bank, While Controversial Security Minister Storms Al-Aqsa Mosque.
In a significant escalation of military operations, Israel has expanded its military activities in both Gaza and the West Bank amidst growing tensions.
Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gvir's controversial storming of the Al-Aqsa Mosque has provoked outrage among Palestinians and international observers.
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant announced plans to extend control over large areas of Gaza, labeling them as 'security zones' aimed at reinforcing Jewish settlement in the region.
On Wednesday, he declared that Israeli forces would initiate operations in Gaza 'to cleanse areas of terrorists and infrastructure and to take control of extensive lands that will be added to the security areas of the State of Israel.'
These statements followed the deployment of an additional Israeli battalion in southern Gaza as part of an intensified assault.
The Israeli Defense Forces issued a full evacuation order for Rafah, situated at the southern border of Gaza, while beginning incursions in areas targeting significant zones between Rafah and Khan Younis.
This evacuation order represents the most extensive military operation since Israel resumed its assault on Gaza on October 18, ending a two-month ceasefire.
Field sources have reported that Israeli forces have effectively gained control over portions of Rafah and are attempting to advance in other areas, marking a shift in the power dynamic within the city.
The Israeli military has stated that it is currently in the process of securing other regions through firepower, with expectations of further advancement in the near future.
Furthermore, Israeli airstrikes have intensified, hitting various locations across Gaza, including Jabalia, Rafah, Khan Younis, and central regions.
Reports indicated that at least 19 individuals, including nine children, were killed in an airstrike on a United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) clinic in northern Gaza, a facility that was reportedly sheltering displaced persons.
The Israeli military contended that their attack was targeting militants who were allegedly using the clinic as a cover.
In other incidents, additional strikes in Khan Younis resulted in the deaths of over 20 Palestinians, including women and children.
This escalation has led to significant condemnation from Palestinian officials and families of hostages held by Hamas, with calls for an end to civilian casualties.
As operations in Gaza intensify, Israeli forces have also increased their presence in the West Bank, with one Palestinian reportedly killed in Nablus.
Military incursions have continued in southern regions, with residents warned of severe consequences comparable to those experienced in the Jenin and Tulkarem camps, where military actions have continued for 72 days.
The Israeli military has circulated notices in refugee camps warning residents of imminent danger, emphasizing that areas hosting militant activity may face substantial repercussions.
Plans are underway to dismantle refugee camps in the West Bank, integrating them into smaller neighborhoods under control of Palestinian cities, while maintaining overall Israeli jurisdiction.
Additionally, there has been a marked increase in settlement construction plans, significantly surpassing approvals for implementation expected in 2024, with reports indicating the planning of over 11,315 settlement units in the past three months.
In a separate and provocative act, Minister Ben Gvir led a storming of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, his actions provoking condemnation from various Arab nations, including Saudi Arabia, which emphasized the need to safeguard international humanitarian law and the historical status of Jerusalem.
The Jordanian foreign ministry characterized Ben Gvir's actions as a serious provocation and a violation of the sacred status of Al-Aqsa, asserting that there is no Israeli sovereignty over occupied East Jerusalem and its religious sites.
Warnings have been issued about the potential for significant escalation in the region during the ongoing Jewish holidays, reflecting heightened anxieties over the security situation.
