King Abdullah II Calls for Ceasefire and Humanitarian Aid in Gaza During Germany Visit

The Jordanian monarch emphasizes the need for an end to hostilities and a return to peace negotiations amid escalating tensions.
King Abdullah II of Jordan has called for an immediate end to the Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip, advocating for the restoration of a ceasefire during a press conference in Berlin with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

The King stated, "The Israeli war on Gaza must stop, the ceasefire must be restored, and humanitarian response efforts must resume."

Amid ongoing conflict, Jordan is actively providing aid to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where over 50,000 individuals have reportedly lost their lives since late 2023 due to the Israeli campaign.

King Abdullah underscored the urgent necessity for international attention to what he termed a tragedy in Gaza.

Additionally, the King expressed concerns regarding the Israeli military actions in the Occupied West Bank, which have led to the significant destruction of communities and the displacement of numerous Palestinian families.

He brought attention to the increasing violence directed at both Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, warning that such actions are heightening regional tensions and complicating efforts toward peace.

King Abdullah reiterated that a two-state solution remains crucial for achieving lasting peace and security for both the Palestinian and Israeli peoples, as well as for the wider region.

Chancellor Scholz echoed the need for renewed focus on "serious negotiations" to bring an end to the conflict in Gaza, as Israel continues its military actions against Hamas.

He stressed, "What is needed now is a return to the ceasefire and the release of all hostages," advocating for a negotiated post-war framework that also ensures Israel's security.

During the joint press conference, Scholz called attention to the humanitarian situation, noting that aid has not reached Gaza for an extended period, stating, "This cannot and must not continue." He emphasized that sustainable peace in both Gaza and the West Bank can only be realized through a political solution.

Israel resumed its military activities in Gaza on March 18 after a hiatus of nearly two months, with renewed aerial bombardments and a ground offensive, leading to over 1,066 reported fatalities in the region since the resumption of hostilities, according to the health ministry in Gaza, which is governed by Hamas.
