Israeli Military Resumes Stance Against Humanitarian Aid to Gaza

Facing significant internal pressure, the Israeli Defense Forces retract previous proposals to allow aid delivery amid ongoing military operations.
The Israeli military has reversed its earlier stance on allowing humanitarian aid into Gaza following pressure from the Israeli government.

Recently, military leadership had advised Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration on the necessity of permitting food and medical supplies to enter Gaza to avoid potential violations of international law.

However, the military's request to resume humanitarian aid came under fire from Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who accused the military of undermining political decisions.

On Monday, the Israeli military released an official statement asserting that it would not allow any relief supplies to enter Gaza.

Media reports indicated that military discussions on facilitating aid had been held over the past week, and a warning was issued regarding an impending crisis due to the shortage of essential supplies.

The military had suggested a phased reintroduction of aid supplies, including food, fuel, and medicine, to prevent a deliberate breach of international humanitarian law and to avert accountability for military leaders.

Israeli sources noted that significant humanitarian supplies had entered Gaza during a ceasefire period, which they claimed would sustain the population for several weeks.

However, the military also pointed out that international organizations were campaigning against Israel regarding aid distribution, urging that limited assistance needed to be provided.

The World Food Programme announced the closure of all 25 bakeries it operates in Gaza due to flour shortages and a lack of fuel, attributed to the prolonged Israeli blockade.

Currently, the food supplies available for hot meal distribution are estimated to last less than two weeks, providing only a fraction of daily nutritional needs for individuals.

Despite warnings from human rights organizations and government officials about the severe impact of the ongoing blockade on food security in Gaza, Israeli security sources have claimed that no evidence of widespread hunger or the onset of epidemics exists.

They projected a timeline of 40 to 50 days before food stocks in Gaza would be depleted.

Military officials indicated that humanitarian conditions would worsen as the intense military operation shifts to Rafah, shortening food supply timelines in combat zones.

In a recent forum organized by a local publication, Smotrich emphasized that no food or aid supplies would enter Gaza, asserting the Israeli government’s authority over military decisions.

He indicated that the military needed to recognize the unique nature of the current government, which he claims insists on its right to make political decisions and direct the military accordingly.

In response to these dynamics, the Israeli military plans to initiate a pilot program in Rafah that will involve the distribution of food and medical supplies under military supervision rather than through local organizations.

The military has suggested it may recruit international relief organizations for aid distribution but retains the alternative of executing the distribution itself with the assistance of private American contractors.

This initial distribution effort is seen as part of broader military operations that focus not only on military objectives against Hamas but also on leveraging conditions for potential negotiations for further prisoner exchanges.
