Sudan Files Case Against UAE at International Court Over Alleged Genocide Support

Accusations arise amidst ongoing conflict that has resulted in significant humanitarian crises in Sudan.
The Sudanese government has officially filed a case against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), alleging violations of the Genocide Convention.

The allegations suggest that the UAE has provided 'direct support' to the paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which the Sudanese authorities claim has enabled acts of genocide against the Masalit ethnic group in Darfur.

This legal action purportedly stems from the ongoing conflict in Sudan, which has persisted for nearly two years between the RSF and the Sudanese army.

The war has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and displaced over 12 million people, exacerbating an already severe humanitarian crisis within the country.

In response to these accusations, the UAE has categorically denied the claims, branding them as a 'cynical publicity stunt' aimed at diverting attention from Sudan's internal issues.

UAE Foreign Minister Anwar Gargash commented via social media, urging Sudan to focus on resolving its ongoing conflict and the humanitarian situation, rather than engaging in 'feeble media maneuvers' that he argues hinder peace efforts.

As the conflict continues, the situation in Sudan remains dire, with reports of famine officially declared in certain areas.

The chaos has led to a systemic collapse of governance, impacting various regions including Darfur, which has historically been a hotspot for violence.

Although the RSF has denied direct involvement in civilian attacks, there have been significant concerns raised regarding their actions, including recent reports of surrounding and attacking the Zamzam refugee camp near el-Fasher in North Darfur.

The allegations and counterallegations between Sudan and the UAE signal a complex international dynamic that could have implications for regional stability and humanitarian efforts in the area.
