Syria Signs Landmark Agreement with Kurdish Forces in Northeast

Syria Signs Landmark Agreement with Kurdish Forces in Northeast

Ceasefire and integration plans aim to reshape control in war-torn Syria.
On March 10, 2025, Syria's interim government finalized a significant agreement with the Kurdish-led authority governing the northeast region of the country.

This groundbreaking deal, announced during a formal signing ceremony in Damascus, includes a ceasefire and plans for the integration of the Syrian Democratic Forces, which have received support from the United States, into the Syrian army.

Interim President Ahmad Al-Sharaa and Mazloum Abdi, the commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces, were the key signatories of the agreement.

The implementation of this deal, set to take place by the end of the year, aims to facilitate the re-establishment of central government control over critical infrastructure, including border crossings with Iraq and Turkey, airports, and oil fields in northeast Syria.

Furthermore, prisons housing approximately 9,000 suspected Daesh members are expected to come under the jurisdiction of the central government.

The agreement outlines that the Kurdish population will be granted constitutional rights, including the ability to use and teach their language—rights that had been suppressed under the previous regime of Bashar Assad.

Additionally, provisions for the return of hundreds of thousands of displaced Kurds to their homes have been included in the framework of the deal.

All Syrian citizens, regardless of religion or ethnicity, are also reported to be included in the political process going forward.

This aspect of the agreement comes as the Syrian government's new leadership is actively seeking to establish authority across the country and engage in political reconciliation with minority communities, notably the Druze in the southern regions.

On the same day, the Syrian government reported the conclusion of military operations against loyalist insurgents to Assad, marking an end to what has been described as the most severe fighting since the civil war's resolution.

This announcement followed a surprise attack by gunmen from the Alawite community on a police patrol near Latakia, which sparked extensive clashes along the coastal area of Syria.

In a statement, Colonel Hassan Abdel-Ghani, spokesperson for the Defense Ministry, delivered a warning to those still loyal to the former regime, asserting a commitment to suppress any resurgence of insurgent activity.

He emphasized that security forces would pursue hidden networks of former loyalists.

Reports from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights indicated that clashes resulted in approximately 1,130 fatalities, including around 830 civilians.

However, these figures have not been independently verified.

Amid the rising tensions, President Al-Sharaa has characterized retaliatory attacks on Alawite civilians and abuses against detainees as isolated events, announcing the formation of a committee to investigate these occurrences.

The situation has raised concerns among Western nations, prompting calls for a reassessment of economic sanctions against Syria.

In a public statement, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio called for accountability concerning these recent violent acts and reaffirmed support for Syria's diverse religious and ethnic minorities.
