U.S. Stocks Face Significant Declines Amid Trade Tensions

American equities are poised for their worst three-day losses since 1987 as trade tensions escalate.
U.S. stock markets experienced another turbulent trading session on Monday, with significant declines noted across major indices.

This downturn comes in the wake of the White House's decision to impose unexpectedly high tariffs on numerous key trading partners, which has contributed to a market downturn.

According to reports, the American stock market is on track to see its most pronounced losses over a three-day period since 1987.

The yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note rose by 15 basis points to 4.15%.

In a related development, President Trump threatened to impose an additional 50% tariff on China, supplementing current tariffs amid escalating rhetoric between the two nations.

The S&P 500 index fell by 2%, resulting in a nearly 20% drop from its closing peak in February, thereby entering bear market territory as defined by Wall Street standards.

At its lowest point during the session, the S&P 500 entered this bear market phase.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined by 962 points, or 2.5%, marking consecutive losses of 1500 points for the first time ever over the preceding weekend.

The Nasdaq Composite also witnessed a drop of 1.7%, continuing its downward trend as investors liquidated profitable technology stocks to bolster liquidity.

The Nasdaq is now down approximately 24% from its all-time high.

After a brief surge post-opening, which briefly propelled the Dow Jones into positive territory, speculation regarding a potential pause in tariff actions circulated within trading floors and social media, possibly contributing to the earlier uptick.

The White House confirmed to media outlets that discussions concerning tariffs remain ongoing.

Additionally, crude oil prices intensified their losses following President Trump’s threats directed towards China.
