Israel Intensifies Strikes in Southern Lebanon Amid Escalation of Conflict

The Israeli military escalates its strikes against Hezbollah, amid efforts by the United States and Iran to broker a Middle East conflict resolution.
May 26, 2026 - The Israeli army has intensified strikes in southern Lebanon on Monday, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that he had ordered an escalation of the military's operations.

This move comes amidst ongoing tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, which have continued to exchange fire despite a ceasefire effective since April 17.In his video statement, Netanyahu emphasized, "I have ordered an even greater acceleration of our operations," asserting that the Israeli forces will increase their firepower and aim to "crush" Hezbollah.

Following this call for escalation, residents in the southern suburbs of Beirut were seen fleeing, as the area is a stronghold for the Iran-backed group. The Israeli air force conducted multiple strikes in the Bekaa valley region in eastern Lebanon on Monday evening, according to Lebanon's National News Agency (NNA).

Earlier in the day, dozens of airstrikes targeted several towns and villages in southern Lebanon, resulting in the deaths of three individuals in two cars and a motorcycle, as reported by NNA.

Subsequent strikes were focused near the ancient city of Tyre, with Israel accusing Hezbollah of violating the ceasefire. The Israeli military issued evacuation orders for 10 villages, citing violations of the truce agreement by Hezbollah.

In response to these developments, Hezbollah claimed responsibility for targeting three barracks and a military post in northern Israel, stating that their actions were a response to the breach of the ceasefire.Since early March, according to Lebanese authorities, Israeli strikes have resulted in over 3,100 deaths.

The Israeli military also confirmed that one of its soldiers was killed in southern Lebanon on Monday, raising the total number of soldiers killed since the conflict with Hezbollah began to 23.

An additional civilian contractor has lost their life. Two far-right Israeli ministers, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, called for an expansion of Israel's military campaign in Lebanon.

Smotrich suggested that for each explosive drone strike by Hezbollah, "10 buildings must fall in Beirut".

Ben Gvir advocated for a return to intensive warfare and the taking of control over the Zahrani River. The Israeli army maintains control over a strip of Lebanese territory approximately 10 kilometers deep.

The Litani River has been designated as the boundary within which Israel aims to clear Hezbollah fighters, though this move remains contested.Lebanese President Joseph Aoun defended his decision to hold talks with Israel, stressing that demanding a complete withdrawal from southern Lebanon is "non-negotiable".

Further negotiations between Lebanon and Israel are scheduled to take place in Washington on June 2-3.

The Pentagon will host a prelude meeting of military officials from both countries on May 29.Hezbollah's opposition to direct negotiations with Israel was reiterated by the group’s leader, Naim Qassem, who also emphasized his refusal to disarm.
