12-Year-Old Boy Killed in West Bank Amid Increased Violence

12-Year-Old Boy Killed in West Bank Amid Increased Violence

Ayman al-Hammouni's death highlights ongoing tensions and rising casualties among Palestinian children in the region.
Ayman al-Hammouni, a 12-year-old boy from Hebron, was shot and killed last Friday, two days after a phone call with his father filled with dreams of future plans, including joining a karate club and aspiring to become a doctor or engineer.

His death is part of a worrying trend as the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) intensify operations in the West Bank, following the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which has led to a surge in violence and a significant increase in civilian casualties.

In 2023, approximately two children have been killed each week in the West Bank, surpassing the average from the previous year, when 93 children lost their lives due to the ongoing conflict.

Human rights organizations have raised alarms about the situation, with fears that tactics used in Gaza are being adopted in the West Bank.

Such tactics include displacement of families, demolition of homes, and looser engagement rules for soldiers.

Ayman and his 10-year-old brother Aysar were visiting their relatives in the Jabal Jawhar area of Hebron when the incident occurred.

This area, close to the Tomb of the Patriarchs, has been the site of heightened IDF activity, particularly during the Friday evening prayer times frequented by Jewish settlers.

The area has seen increased military patrols, raising tensions between local Palestinians and Israeli forces.

At approximately 6:30 PM, footage from security cameras captured the chaotic scene as Ayman and his cousins were outside.

Following the sound of a gunshot, Ayman and others ran for cover as IDF soldiers advanced on the location.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that a bullet likely struck Ayman after he sought safety inside his uncle’s property.

Video evidence suggests the shot was fired from the direction of the Israeli soldiers present in the area at that time.

Reports from advocacy groups indicate that Ayman suffered a gunshot wound to the back, which resulted in significant injury; medical assistance came too late.

The family of Ayman has not yet received an official medical report detailing the cause of death, but accounts from relatives suggest the bullet lodged in his lungs.

Nassar al-Hammouni, Ayman’s father, who works in construction and security in Ramallah, received the devastating news while navigating security checkpoints on his way home.

Nassar reported a distressing encounter with an IDF soldier who allegedly taunted him regarding his son's death.

Such interactions have become increasingly common amid the turmoil.

The IDF has not commented on the specifics surrounding Ayman's death.

Historical evidence suggests that investigations into military actions often lead to minimal accountability; reports indicate that Israeli soldiers face a mere 0.4% chance of prosecution for fatal engagements with Palestinians.

In the days following Ayman's death, Aysar returned to school but struggled to cope with the absence of his brother, requesting a change of classroom to avoid reminders of Ayman.

Family and community members continue to mourn, grappling with the realities of the ongoing violence that has permeated their lives.

Human rights advocates continue to stress the urgent need for international attention to address the rising toll on children amid the conflict in the region.
