Global Acclaim Follows Election of Lebanon's New President Joseph Aoun

Worldwide leaders express hope for Lebanon’s stability and reform under newly elected President Joseph Aoun after a two-year political vacancy.
In a significant move marking the end of a two-year political stalemate, Lebanese lawmakers elected Joseph Aoun, the commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces, as the new President of Lebanon.

The election has drawn praise and recognition from global leaders and organizations, underscoring its potential impact on Lebanon’s thorny path to economic stability and reform.

France was among the first to commend the election, with President Emmanuel Macron declaring it a 'crucial election' for Lebanon.

Macron, speaking through the platform X in both French and Arabic, highlighted the election as an opening for reform and a chance to restore the country's sovereignty and prosperity.

The French foreign ministry echoed this sentiment, urging Lebanon to form a strong government capable of leading the nation out of its entrenched political and economic crisis.

Other Arab nations quickly followed in offering congratulatory messages.

Qatar’s foreign ministry expressed its hope that Aoun's presidency would contribute to Lebanon's security and stability, while the Gulf Cooperation Council’s Secretary-General, Jasem Albudaiwi, extended his well wishes for Lebanon's prosperity and reinforced the GCC’s commitment to Lebanon's sovereignty and security.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas voiced optimism that Lebanon, under Aoun's leadership, would overcome what he termed as the 'repercussions of Israeli aggression'—a reference to the recent hostilities between Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

On the international stage, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres highlighted the importance of the election.

His statement called for a prompt formation of a government to address the needs of the Lebanese population and stressed the UN's dedication to supporting Lebanon's stability and state authority.

Additionally, the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, emphasized the significance of overcoming Lebanon’s long-standing political vacuum and called for decisive governmental action.

The European Union, represented by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, described Aoun’s election as a 'moment of hope,' emphasizing Europe’s support for Lebanon's journey towards stability and reform.

Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock similarly viewed the election as an opportunity for change in a country beset by years of crisis.

The global reactions to Aoun's presidency continued with Russia's positive appraisal, describing it as a step towards enhanced internal political stability.

Likewise, the United Kingdom communicated its intention to work closely with Lebanon's new leadership to foster stability and prosperity.

Aoun assumes the presidency during one of Lebanon’s most challenging economic crises.

His election is perceived as a pivotal moment that could steer the nation towards implementing pressing reforms required by international creditors.

The aspirations, both within Lebanon and from the international community, form a complex tapestry of hopes for a nation eager to rebuild and stabilize amidst ongoing adversity.
