Hamas Returns Bodies of Four Israeli Hostages Amid Grief in Israel

The remains of a mother and her two children, along with an elderly man, were handed over to the International Committee of the Red Cross as part of a ceasefire agreement.
The remains of four individuals, including two children and their mother, have been returned to Israel by Hamas in a somber ceremony that marks one of the most distressing days for many Israelis since the outbreak of ongoing conflict.

The deceased are Shiri Bibas, 32, and her sons Ariel and Kfir, ages four and nine months respectively, along with 85-year-old Oded Lifshitz, a retired journalist and peace activist.

The handover occurred on Thursday, February 20, 2025, involving a convoy that delivered the bodies to a forensic center in Tel Aviv for identification and autopsy procedures.

The return follows a highly publicized and contentious transfer ceremony in Khan Younis, which saw armed Hamas militants place the coffins on display before the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

The ICRC criticized this public display, emphasizing that such transfers should occur privately out of respect for the deceased and their families.

Hamas claimed that the Bibas family perished in an Israeli airstrike shortly after they were taken hostage on October 7, 2023, during an attack that resulted in significant casualties and turmoil.

The attack led to the capture of approximately 250 individuals and the deaths of around 1,200 people in Israel.

In the aftermath of the handover, a ceremony attended by military and civic leaders was conducted in Israel, where the coffins were ceremoniously draped in the Israeli flag.

Thousands of mourners lined the route of the convoy, expressing collective grief as the bodies were transported to Tel Aviv.

Many gathered in Hostages Square, a location that has become a focal point for demonstrations urging the return of hostages.

Israel’s President Isaac Herzog expressed profound sorrow, apologizing on behalf of the nation for their inability to protect the victims on the day of the attack.

The release of the bodies has been received amidst a backdrop of existing hostilities, as the ceasefire agreement in place is delicate, with fears of its potential collapse following the recent handover.

The somber atmosphere was further highlighted by the upcoming release of six additional living hostages announced by Hamas, signaling a rare moment of hope amidst a deepening humanitarian crisis in the region.

Negotiations for the next phase of hostage exchanges are underway, with discussions about broader terms for continuing the ceasefire.

The broader conflict has resulted in extensive casualties, with estimates suggesting that approximately 48,000 individuals have died as a consequence of military engagements between Israeli forces and militant groups in Gaza.

As the situation continues to evolve, officials and families of those affected by the ongoing violence remain on edge, grappling with the profound loss while navigating the complexities of potential future negotiations.
