Protests Erupt in Gaza Against Hamas Amid Escalating Conflict

Demonstrations in northern Gaza call for Hamas to withdraw as tensions rise amid the ongoing war.
A significant protest took place on Wednesday in northern Gaza, where hundreds of individuals, including women and children, rallied against Hamas and the ongoing conflict with Israel.

Witnesses reported that demonstrators voiced their demands for Hamas, the Palestinian militant group, to withdraw from governance.

The protest unfolded amid the ruins of Beit Lahia, with participants specifically opposing U.S. plans for population relocation.

Videos circulating on social media purportedly from the demonstration depicted protesters chanting against Hamas.

This follows three consecutive days of protests in Gaza a week prior, marking a rare occurrence of public dissent against Hamas's rule amidst allegations of severe suppression of internal opposition by the group's armed factions.

The signs of increasing popular discontent with Hamas have become more pronounced after 18 months of conflict with Israel.

Recently, a family from Gaza acknowledged the killing of a policeman affiliated with Hamas.

This admission came after they claimed a relative was killed by gunfire, prompting warnings from Hamas's Interior Ministry, which stated it would not tolerate actions that undermine public order.

The protests last month against Hamas by hundreds of demonstrators highlighted a growing readiness among some Gazans to openly criticize the group or take action against it.

Additionally, the issuance of new evacuation orders by the Israeli military has further incited anger among the local population, as the military indicated these orders were a response to rocket fire from the area.

An observable decline in the presence of Hamas police and security forces in recent weeks, following the resumption of extensive Israeli military operations, may have emboldened demonstrators to take to the streets.

This decline in police visibility contrasts sharply with the increased presence of security personnel during the temporary ceasefire in January.

A widely circulated video on social media illustrated the growing anti-Hamas sentiment, showing a policeman shot in the street.

The video captures graphic footage, indicating significant unrest within the community.

The family involved in the incident, notably from the al-Faqih family in Deir al-Balah in central Gaza, released a statement on social media claiming responsibility for the killing of the policeman, while refraining from identifying the individual who fired the weapon.

They clarified that the act was not premeditated and claimed that a family member was fatally shot by a police officer while attempting to resolve a dispute outside a flour storage site.

They rejected allegations that the relative had sustained injuries from shrapnel.

Hamas responded with a statement asserting, "We will not allow any party to create chaos in Gaza or take the law into their own hands," adding that measures would be taken to bring those involved to justice.

In a separate statement, Hamas characterized the killing of the policeman as a crime that serves Israeli interests in attempting to fracture Palestinian unity and foster chaos and corruption within Gaza.

In another incident in Gaza City, another family accused Hamas's police forces of shooting and killing a relative, vowing to seek revenge.

The family issued a statement affirming, "We assure you that our son's blood will not be shed in vain."
