Sudan: Drone Attacks by Rapid Support Forces Intensify Power Outages in Army-Controlled Regions

Power outages endanger millions of internally displaced persons amid escalating humanitarian crisis.
In Sudan, government officials and residents have reported that power outages have occurred in multiple regions controlled by the Sudanese army following drone attacks on power generation facilities by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

According to statements made to Reuters, the initial power failure happened on Monday when drones targeted the Merowe Dam, the largest dam in the country, impacting the Northern State.

Meanwhile, a technical issue also resulted in outages in the states of Nile River and Red Sea.

Expanding further, the power outage extended on Saturday after a recent attack on the Shok Power Station in eastern Sudan, affecting the states of Gadaref, Kassala, and Sennar.

The affected regions comprise major areas under army control in a conflict that has persisted for nearly two years against the RSF, which dominates most of the western regions of the country.

These power interruptions exacerbate the existing challenges for millions of internally displaced individuals residing within these regions, placing immense pressure on living spaces and existing infrastructure.

The Emergency Lawyers group highlighted that these attacks have cut off essential services to hundreds of thousands of civilians, worsening the existing humanitarian crisis.

They emphasized that such disruptions not only violate civilians' basic rights but also heighten the risk of escalating violence.

The ongoing conflict in Sudan has led to the displacement of more than 12 million people in total.

The Global Hunger Observatory recently estimated that approximately 24.6 million individuals, around half of the Sudanese population, would require urgent food assistance by May. In Omdurman, part of the greater Khartoum area where the army holds partial control, residents reported bakery closures and resorted to drawing water from the Nile River.

Sources at the Merowe Power Station indicated that engineers are attempting to restore operations but have yet been successful.

These events continue to underline the extensive impacts of the ongoing conflict in Sudan, affecting infrastructure and livelihoods across the region.
