Five Facts on the Benefits and Risks of Drinking Water

Five Facts on the Benefits and Risks of Drinking Water

Nutritionist Expert Dr. Sofia Ilyashevich, the Head of the Dietary Study and Correction Laboratory at the Russian Health Department, unveils five secrets about drinking water as a foundation of life:

Can Lack of Water Make Us Sick?
Drinking insufficient amounts of water could lead to consequences such as premature skin aging, strokes, heart attacks, and kidney stones. Insufficient water in the body disrupts the balance of water and salt, causing all the unexcreted mineral salts to primarily accumulate in the kidneys as stones, given their role in cleansing the body of waste and toxins.

Additionally, a lack of water thickens the blood, increasing the risk of blood clots, strokes, and heart attacks, as reported by “Russia Today” news network from the local “Komsomolskaya Pravda”.

Swelling Does Not Justify Avoiding Water

If you find your face and legs swollen in the morning, this does not mean you should stop drinking water. Instead, consider the amount of salty food you consumed the night before, including canned foods, snacks, sausages, smoked products, sauces, "hidden salt" in cheese, baked goods, tomato juice, and alcohol. Specifically, certain types of alcohol contain a dangerous mix of acids, salts, and other chemical compounds, so those experiencing swelling should not rely on these products.

Boiling Water Repeatedly is Not Harmful

Contrary to myths, boiling water multiple times does not cause harm to the body. Discussions have long persisted around three beliefs on this topic. One belief was that reboiling water increases the concentration of “heavy” deuterium water sharply, but its fractional composition is minimal and does not pose health effects.

Another argument against reboiling was that the concentration of mineral salts in the water increases. However, these salts precipitate and form scales that also settle at the bottom of the kettle, which is why it is important to remove these residues, making boiled water good and important.

There’s a Daily Drinking Water Standard

Humans lose 2 to 3 liters of water daily through the skin and respiratory organs. This means a healthy adult typically needs 2-3 liters of fluids daily, including water, soups, and unsweetened beverages.

We can intake from 700 milliliters to one liter of fluid from vegetables and fruits. Therefore, you can calculate your standard as follows: multiply 30 milliliters of fluid by your body weight. A person weighing 70 kilograms needs about two liters of water daily.

Certain Individuals Should Be Cautious About Water Consumption

People with chronic kidney diseases or chronic heart failure need to be cautious with water intake, strictly follow their doctor’s recommendations, and measure their fluid intake and output.
