Khalida Jarrar Among Prisoners Released in Gaza Deal Amid Errors in Israeli Lists
The exchange agreement between Israel and Hamas stirs controversy following discrepancies in the list of Palestinian detainees scheduled for release.
In a significant development amid the long-standing Israel-Palestine conflict, Khalida Jarrar, a prominent Palestinian leader affiliated with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), is set to be released as part of the initial phase of a prisoner exchange deal between Israel and Hamas, according to the Israeli Army Radio.
This comes as the Palestinian Authority's Commission for Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs highlights 'clear errors' in the list of prisoners slated for release, as published on Israel's Ministry of Justice website.
Khalida Jarrar is a well-known Palestinian political figure, serving as a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council.
Her activism has led to multiple arrests by Israeli authorities, the latest being on December 26, 2023. Jarrar's imprisonment has drawn international attention and criticism over Israel's policies toward Palestinian political prisoners.
She was previously released in September 2021 after being detained in the summer of 2017.
Detailed revelations in Israeli media on Friday disclosed the names of other Palestinian prisoners to be released as part of the deal, which aims to solidify a ceasefire agreement with Hamas.
Among the names is Dalal Khasib, sister to former Hamas political bureau deputy leader Saleh Al-Arouri, who has been held since January 14, 2024, in an Israeli prison.
Additionally, Abla Sa'adat, wife of PFLP Secretary-General Ahmad Saadat, is included in the list of those to be freed this Sunday.
The Israeli Ministry of Justice issued a list comprising 95 Palestinian prisoners, mostly women and young men under 25, planned for release in the initial phase of the exchange.
However, the Palestinian Commission for Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs has raised concerns regarding inaccuracies in the list, noting incorrect inclusions and incomplete data, urging mediators from Qatar and Egypt to address these discrepancies.
Israeli media, including Haaretz, report that the first phase of this agreement, spanning 42 days, will facilitate the release of 290 Palestinians serving life sentences out of a total of 563 ordered for release.
Notably, Palestinian sources argue Israel typically excludes 1948 Palestinian prisoners from such lists.
The broader exchange over the coming weeks is expected to involve over 600 prisoners serving more than 15 years, alongside 1,000 detainees arrested post-October 7, 2023.
In a calculated move to prevent public rejoicing, Israeli authorities intend to restrict celebratory activities associated with the release of Palestinian detainees.
Israeli Prison Service has stated preparations for the release, proposing releases from Ofer and Shikma prisons, with anticipations set for this weekend.
The deal, approved by Israel's security cabinet, will see the reciprocal release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza, reportedly involving 33 individuals, in a 42-day initial stage.
The agreement has faced criticism, notably from Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, who opposed releasing individuals sentenced to life imprisonment for serious offenses against Israelis.
As anticipation grows, logistical arrangements are underway, with Israeli authorities readying for the release process, while diplomatic stakeholders keep a vigilant eye on the unfolding of this multifaceted transaction in a fraught geopolitical landscape.
