Macron to Visit Lebanon After Nawaf Salam is Named New Prime Minister

The French President is set to express support for Lebanon's new leadership following Joseph Aoun's election and Nawaf Salam's appointment as Prime Minister.
French President Emmanuel Macron will travel to Lebanon on Friday for the first state visit since Joseph Aoun was elected the new president last week.

This visit occurs amid Lebanon's persistent economic challenges and political instability, as Macron seeks to engage with Lebanese leaders to aid the nation's recovery.

The Lebanese presidency confirmed Macron's visit, with discussions expected to focus on forming the new government.

On Tuesday, President Aoun met with Lebanon's French ambassador to discuss preparations for Macron's arrival.

This trip follows Macron’s recent commendation of Nawaf Salam's appointment as Lebanon's new prime minister, which has sparked hopes of a shift in the country's political landscape.

Macron expressed optimism in Salam's leadership, highlighting the prime minister’s commitment to helping Lebanon emerge from its profound economic crisis, worsened by regional conflicts.

Macron’s office emphasized Salam's integrity and dedication to reforming the country, a stance resonating with both Lebanese citizens and the international community.

Macron further expressed confidence that Salam would work toward restoring Lebanon’s sovereignty and addressing necessary economic reforms.

Salam’s appointment has the backing of a majority of Lebanese lawmakers, many of whom see it as an opportunity to reduce Hezbollah's influence and bolster the central government’s authority.

Lebanon has operated under a caretaker government for the past two years, and Salam’s supporters are hopeful his leadership will lead to a more functional and accountable political system.

Macron's office noted that his visit aims to support Lebanon’s new government and ensure that the Lebanese people are represented in a government that is inclusive and reform-focused.

The French presidency emphasized that the establishment of a new government presents promising prospects for Lebanon, especially in overcoming the financial crisis afflicting the country.

Macron has been actively involved in Lebanon's political crisis, having communicated with key Lebanese political figures, including Speaker Nabih Berri, outgoing Prime Minister Najib Mikati, and Walid Jumblatt, the Druze community leader.

Macron's diplomatic efforts underscore France's continued commitment to assisting Lebanon toward stabilization and economic recovery.
