French President Emphasizes Importance of Unity Against Russian Aggression and Warns of Potential Expansion of Conflict
French President Emmanuel Macron has called on his American and Ukrainian counterparts,
Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky, to exercise 'calm and respect' following a disruptive exchange at the White House that raised alarms about the United States' commitment to Ukraine and its relations with European allies.
In an interview with several Sunday publications, including 'Le Tribune Dimanche', Macron emphasized the necessity of returning to a tone of 'calm and respect' to enable meaningful progress, stating, 'Regardless of the anger, everyone needs to restore calm and appreciation, as what is at stake is extremely significant.' The Élysée Palace confirmed that Macron had spoken to both leaders since Friday evening about the escalating tensions.
Macron issued a warning that if Russian President Vladimir Putin is not contained, he 'will certainly go to Moldova, and potentially even further to Romania.' He asserted that any potential withdrawal of the US from the Ukrainian situation would not be in Washington's interest, arguing that 'what the United States has been doing for the past three years aligns perfectly with its diplomatic and military traditions.' Furthermore, he cautioned that if the US were to agree to a ceasefire without any security guarantees for Ukraine, 'its geostrategic deterrent capability in facing Russia, China, and others would evaporate on the very same day.' Macron's comments reflect the ongoing concerns regarding the stability of the region and the implications of US foreign policy on European security.
