US Forces Target Key Al-Qaeda Leader in Syria

Airstrike eliminates senior Hurras Al-Din military leader amidst ongoing counterterrorism operations.
The US Army has confirmed the death of Muhammed Yusuf Ziya Talay, a prominent military leader of Hurras Al-Din, an affiliate of Al-Qaeda operating in Syria.

The operation took place on February 23, 2025, in a precision airstrike conducted by US Central Command (CENTCOM) in Northwest Syria.

The airstrike comes shortly after Hurras Al-Din announced its dissolution in January 2025, following a complex situation in the region.

CENTCOM released a statement outlining the details of the airstrike, which successfully targeted Talay, a key figure within the organization.

This airstrike is part of a sustained campaign against terrorist elements in Syria that have been classified by the US as threats to national and global security.

In an earlier operation on February 22, US forces eliminated another senior leader of Hurras Al-Din, Wasim Tahsin Bayraqdar.

The ramifications of the group's announcement of dissolution seem complex, as several members still remain active and vulnerable to counterterrorism efforts.

Hurras Al-Din, which comprises foreign jihadists and local fighters, primarily operated in the mountainous regions of northwestern Syria, an area heavily contested in the ongoing civil conflict.

The US military's presence in Syria is a component of an international coalition formed in 2014 aimed at combating the spread of Daesh (ISIS) and other terrorist organizations.

This coalition continues to engage in operations targeting various extremist factions despite the shifting dynamics on the ground, particularly the rise of other groups such as Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham, which recently gained prominence after overthrowing a number of rival factions in December 2024.

The announcement of the dissolution of Hurras Al-Din has raised questions regarding the future of jihadist groups in the region, particularly as counterterrorism operations persist against remaining operative cells.
