Saudi Arabia is confronting a renewed strategic dilemma in Yemen as shifting regional dynamics and the widening confrontation involving Iran force the kingdom to reconsider how far it should engage in the country’s long-running conflict.

For years Riyadh has sought to wind down its costly intervention in Yemen, which began in two thousand fifteen when a Saudi-led coalition launched military operations against the Houthi movement after it seized control of the capital, Sanaa.

The Houthis, widely regarded by regional powers as closely aligned with Iran, still control large parts of northern Yemen, including the country’s most populous areas.

In recent months Saudi officials have intensified diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict and stabilising Yemen’s fragmented political landscape.

At the same time, the Houthis remain a formidable force after years of war.

The movement has consolidated control across much of northern Yemen and developed increasingly sophisticated missile and drone capabilities that have previously been used to strike targets inside Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

The expanding regional conflict involving Iran adds another layer of uncertainty.

Although the Houthis have expressed rhetorical support for Tehran and its allies, recent signals suggest they are carefully weighing whether to escalate their involvement, aware that doing so could provoke severe military retaliation.

For Saudi Arabia, the challenge now lies in preventing Yemen from becoming a renewed battleground while safeguarding its own security and preserving progress toward a political settlement.

Balancing those goals has become increasingly complex as regional tensions reshape the strategic landscape.
