Former Philippines Mayor Faces Money Laundering Charges; China Ends International Adoptions; Shanghai Unveils World's Largest Indoor Ski Resort

Ex-Philippines mayor Alice Guo faces Manila charges after extradition over money laundering and syndicate ties. NATO urges China to halt military aid to Russia as Ukraine seeks peace pressure.
Former Philippines mayor Alice Guo, extradited from Indonesia for immigration violations, returns to Manila to face charges of laundering over 100 million pesos and alleged ties to Chinese criminal syndicates, with an ongoing Senate investigation centered on a casino raid in her former jurisdiction, Bamban, led by Interior Minister Benjamin Abalos Jr.

Meanwhile, China has announced it will halt international adoptions, ending a longstanding policy that has seen over 160,000 children adopted abroad since 1992, primarily by U.S. families, amid declining birth rates and ethical concerns, joining similar moves by the Netherlands and Denmark.

In another significant development from China, Shanghai has revealed the world’s largest indoor ski resort during a historically hot August, the 100,000-square-meter Shanghai L*SNOW Indoor Skiing Theme Resort features innovative energy-saving technologies and highlights the increasing popularity of skiing in China, especially post the 2022 Winter Olympics.

Turning to Southeast Asia, in Myanmar, communist rebels have rescued 138 elephants from junta-controlled timber camps, shielding them from traffickers amid continued conflict following the 2021 coup. The Communist Party of Burma aims to reclaim territory from the military while preserving these majestic animals.

On the international stage, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has called on China to stop its military support for Russia in the Ukraine conflict, citing that China's provision of weaponry has helped sustain the war, a stance echoed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky who urges China to pressure Russia for peace.

Finally, in a bit of economic news, the United Nations' world food price index dipped slightly in August, easing to 120.7 points, with lower prices for sugar, meat, and cereals. However, the FAO has revised its global cereal production forecast down by 2.8 million metric tons due to adverse weather conditions in regions like the EU, Mexico, and Ukraine.
