Amid the formidable eruption of Mount Ibu, hundreds of residents from Indonesia’s Halmahera Island have been evacuated as local authorities declared a state of emergency.

The governmental response, which escalated following the volcano’s heightened alert level, aims to safeguard communities vulnerable to volcanic threats.

The Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency, collaborating with the military, police, and other related agencies, commenced the evacuation efforts on Wednesday.

The swift action focused on six villages within the potential danger zone of the eruption.

Irfan Idrus, the head of the regional disaster agency, confirmed the urgency of the evacuation was prompted by Mount Ibu’s escalated state.

According to the Indonesian National Disaster Management Agency, Mount Ibu released a column of ash towering four kilometers above its peak, marking a significant eruption that persisted for over two minutes.

Authorities have advised the public to avoid approaching the four-kilometer radius surrounding the volcano, with an additional sectoral restriction extending up to six kilometers towards the volcano's crater.

Indonesia, positioned along the Pacific Ring of Fire, experiences the highest incidence of seismic activity and volcanic eruptions globally.

The archipelago is home to over 120 active volcanoes, making disasters of this nature a recurring challenge for the nation.
