Lebanese Army Expands Presence in Southern Lebanon as Israeli Forces Delay Full Withdrawal

Lebanese forces continue deployment while Israeli forces remain in key areas despite extended withdrawal deadline.
The Lebanese army has expanded its deployment in southern Lebanon, particularly in the eastern sector, including villages from Naqoura to Marwahin.

This comes as Israeli forces maintain their presence at strategic locations like Labbouneh Heights and Jabal Blat, despite an extended deadline for their withdrawal, now set for February 18, 2025. This extension was agreed upon by Lebanon, Israel, and the United States as part of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah, which took effect on November 27, 2024.

In the wake of Israel's partial withdrawal, the Lebanese army has entered central sector villages, including Yaroun, and reopened roads with the help of bulldozers.

The Lebanese Red Cross also retrieved bodies of Hezbollah fighters who had been trapped under rubble since October 2024, when the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah escalated.

Efforts by civilians to return to their homes have been hindered by ongoing Israeli hostilities.

Israeli drone strikes, including stun grenades dropped near Yaroun, have targeted civilians attempting to return after the Lebanese army’s deployment.

Additionally, protests erupted in Kfarkila as residents expressed frustration over delays in the Lebanese army’s arrival.

Residents of Aitaroun remain unable to return to their homes due to Israeli forces’ continued presence in the area.

Israeli army spokesman Avichay Adraee reminded border area residents of the extended withdrawal deadline, noting that delays in redeployment may occur to prevent Hezbollah from reestablishing military presence.

Israeli forces have been accused of using lethal force against civilians attempting to return home, resulting in at least 26 deaths and 160 injuries, including women and children.

The United Nations condemned the use of lethal force, describing it as a violation of international law.

Since the ceasefire took effect, Lebanon has recorded over 670 violations by Israeli forces, leading to significant casualties.

Additionally, six Lebanese civilians, who were detained by Israeli forces while attempting to return to their homes in Houla and Markaba, were released following diplomatic efforts led by Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati.

Meanwhile, Israeli military operations have resulted in the demolition of homes and infrastructure in towns such as Al-Wazzani and Al-Mufilha.
