Lebanon's PM Urges UN Action Amid Escalating Clashes; US Presses Israel on Activist's Killing; Iran Denies Missile Allegations

Lebanon urges UN action against Israeli attacks amid rising regional tensions. Iran denies supplying missiles to Russia as EU considers new sanctions.
Lebanon's Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati has called on the UN Security Council to take effective measures against Israeli attacks on Lebanese civilians, emphasizing the protection of Civil Defense personnel. This plea comes amidst escalating tensions in southern Lebanon, with Al-Fajr Forces joining Hezbollah in clashes against Israel, leading to casualties and extensive damage.

Meanwhile, the United States has pressed Israel to swiftly conclude the investigation into the killing of American Turkish activist Aysenur Ezgi Eygi during a protest in the West Bank. Eygi's death has drawn sharp criticism from Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, highlighting the ongoing conflict over settlement expansion near Nablus.

Shifting focus to international allegations, Iran has firmly denied supplying Russia with ballistic missiles amid the ongoing Ukraine war. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani refuted these claims, while the EU hinted at potential new sanctions if the allegations are confirmed.

Closer to home, Germany is tightening its border controls starting September 16 to address rising migration and security concerns. This move, announced by Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, aims to curb irregular migration and enhance public safety, reflecting broader European challenges and political dynamics influenced by the far-right AfD party.

Over in Gaza, a UN convoy detained by Israel for over eight hours has been released, as confirmed by UNRWA head Philippe Lazzarini. The Israeli military stopped the convoy citing suspicions of "Palestinian suspects" on board, jeopardizing a crucial polio vaccination campaign for 640,000 children following a confirmed polio case.

Finally, Israeli airstrikes in Syria have resulted in significant casualties and infrastructure damage near Masyaf. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported 26 deaths among pro-Iran groups and weapons experts, underscoring the rising tensions and increased Israeli military actions in the region since October 2023.
