Macron Announces Release of Two French-Israeli Hostages by Hamas

President Emmanuel Macron confirms the imminent release of Ofer Kalderon and Ohad Yahalomi in the first phase of the hostage release agreement.
French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Friday that two French-Israeli citizens, Ofer Kalderon and Ohad Yahalomi, are among the initial group of hostages set to be freed by Hamas as per the ongoing ceasefire agreement with Israel.

This development is part of a broader accord aimed at resolving tensions following the abduction of multiple hostages during the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel by Hamas.

The announcement coincided with a statement from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office indicating that the release of these hostages from Gaza is expected to commence on Sunday.

President Macron shared this news through a social media post, affirming the presence of Kalderon and Yahalomi on the list of 33 hostages to be released in the initial phase of the agreement.

He reiterated France's relentless efforts to secure the safe return of its citizens to their families.

Macron's announcement further stated that he plans to meet with the families of the two hostages soon, highlighting France's commitment to providing support and reassurance during this challenging time.

Ohad Yahalomi, who has endured captivity and marked his 50th birthday while held hostage, was abducted from his home in the Nir Oz kibbutz.

Notably, his 12-year-old son, who was also kidnapped separately, had been released earlier in November 2023 during an initial truce agreement.

Similarly, Ofer Kalderon, aged 54, was abducted along with his son and daughter from the same kibbutz.

The children have since been released in the prior November truce, marking partial family reunions amid the ongoing conflict.

This latest development signifies a critical chapter in the long-standing conflict and humanitarian crisis in the region, attracting global interest and underscoring the role of international diplomacy in conflict resolution.
