Zimbabwe Culls Elephants Amid Drought, as Mali, Papua New Guinea, and Gaza Grapple with Crises

Zimbabwe culls 200 elephants amid severe drought; regional conflicts escalate from Mali to Gaza.
Zimbabwe is taking drastic measures to address severe drought and food shortages by culling 200 elephants, marking the first cull since 1988 in several districts. As officials work to decongest parks exceeding their capacity, neighboring Mali faces a different type of crisis.

In Mali’s capital Bamako, a military training camp was attacked with explosions and smoke filling the air, reflecting the country’s ongoing insurgency threats. These insurgencies remind us of similar strife, such as the tribal violence in Papua New Guinea.

Papua New Guinea’s Enga province has seen over 35 deaths due to tribal clashes linked to illegal mining, prompting a major military response to restore peace. Amidst these regional conflicts, we turn our attention to Gaza, where public opinion is shifting dramatically.

A new poll shows a significant decline in support among Gazans for Hamas' attack on Israel, with many now viewing the decision as incorrect. In response to the ongoing tensions, Jordan and Egypt are advocating for peace.

Jordan’s King Abdullah II and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi are urging for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza to ensure regional security and Palestinian rights. Echoing the call for peace, Israel’s Shin Bet is staying vigilant against threats.

Israel’s Shin Bet has thwarted a Hezbollah plot to assassinate a former senior defense official, underscoring the escalating tensions between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah. It's a stark reminder of the complex and interconnected nature of regional security issues.
