Conflict Fuels Cholera Crisis in Sudan

Ongoing civil war in Sudan worsens the cholera outbreak, straining healthcare and displacing millions.
Sudan's cholera epidemic, declared in August 2024, has become a severe public health crisis, with over 50,000 cases and around 1,300 deaths reported by mid-January 2025. The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has exacerbated the spread of the disease, particularly in states such as Al-Jazirah, Gedaref, and Kassala, which are already struggling with displacement and lack of basic services.

The cholera outbreak has claimed numerous lives, with children, particularly malnourished ones, making up more than 70% of cases.

The conflict has decimated the country’s healthcare system, leaving 70-80% of health facilities non-functional.

Displaced populations in overcrowded camps are especially vulnerable due to poor sanitation and lack of access to clean water.

Humanitarian organizations like Médecins Sans Frontières, the WHO, and UNICEF have scrambled to provide aid, but ongoing violence and logistical challenges have hindered efforts.

Health workers face daily risks, and 141 attacks on health facilities since the conflict began have left 240 dead.

Despite efforts to control the outbreak, the lack of peace and security continues to hamper the delivery of lifesaving assistance.

The humanitarian crisis is deepening, with a high case fatality rate of 2.6%, far exceeding the World Health Organization's threshold of 1%.

Aid groups are calling for international support to address both the immediate cholera crisis and the broader health emergency in Sudan.
